Comox Valley Conservation Strategy Community Partnership

Date: May 14, 2010
Re: Raven Coal Mine Project

To: This is an open letter to the environmental assessment office (EAO) regarding the proposed Raven Coal Mine proposed for Fanny Bay.

The Comox Valley Conservation Strategy is a community partnership of 12 local environmental and resident groups focused on conservation of land and water resources of the valley. At our May meeting representatives of our member organizations raised concerns regarding this project and the environmental review process.

We are very concerned about the potential impacts of this project on local land and waters expressed by many groups and local governments such as Coal Watch, the BC Shellfish Growers association, the Islands Trust, the Comox Valley Regional District and Qualicum Beach municipal council.

The potential harm to local drinking water, fish and wildlife, ecosystems and the marine environment of Baynes Sound from this project requires a extensive review by the EAO.

ALL citizens need to be encouraged to become actively involved in the stewardship of our Island’s remaining VITAL resources and ensure responsible representation and legislation from our elected officials.

We are therefore requesting that the EAO hold public information meetings in all Comox Valley communities so that all citizens will have an opportunity to participate in the environmental review hearings.
