Exploration permit granted for Hillsborough Resources' Quinsam South claims

CoalWatch News, April 30 2015

On April 14, 2015, Hillsborough Resources was granted an exploration permit for its "Quinsam South" coal claims. This permit allows the company to explore for coal for up to five years in its two claims (#418447, #418448) immediately southeast of Hillsborough's Quinsam Mine.

The claims total 2287 hectares in the Oyster River watershed. They straddle the north end of the Comox Valley Regional District and the south end of the Strathcona Regional District on central Vancouver Island.

Almost two years ago, on June 25, 2013, in response to Hillsborough Resources' application for the two claims, the Comox Valley Regional District wrote to the Minister of Energy and Mines and requested "that no coal license be issued."

Nevertheless, on January 16, 2014 the Ministry granted the tenures, following which Hillsborough applied for the "notice of work" - essentially, a work permit. On June 27, 2014, the Regional District again wrote to the Ministry, stating that "The CVRD again requests that no coal license be issued (rescinded) and that no notice of work for exploratory drilling be issued."

The CVRD's letter includes maps showing the drilling locations for the exploration work.

On April 14, 2015, Hillsborough Resources was granted its "Exploration Activities and Reclamation Permit.
