Hip hop hooray for Under One Roof!

Delores Broten, February 28, 2010

Went to the Under One Roof fund-raising dance last night – turn out was a bit lower than hoped for, due apparently to a competing rave somewhere up north. However, the performers were absolutely great – cameron gun sutherland (I think?) wrote a wonderful song for coalwatch called When the Roof Comes Down, and some of the hip hop was outrageously funny and very good. It was a wonderful tribal event.

But loud, of course.

Had a fabulous time and the crowd of younger (than me) people were so inspiring and pleasant to be around. And they got the message.

There were banners up with Stop Coal slogans – Wendy Keating got a photo of my favourite which said “Save Our Coal Until It Turns To Diamonds.”

Someone had put together a photo slide show of coal pictures interspersed with lovely coastal scenes, maybe from Fanny Bay and they projected from behind that onto a sheet on the wall all night long – it was VERY effective.

All the performers mentioned the issue in various ways (Leave the Coal in the Hole, they all said) and everyone did a great job. The whole evening was EXTREMELY well organized with everything thought of and tight but light crowd control.

We had a GREAT time at this party. Thank you BEN!!!!

Watch www.coalwatch.ca for news of the next dance.
