John Snyder - September Update from CoalWatch

Hi everyone:

I hope that everyone has had a wonderful summer and enjoyed what this fabulous area has to offer. CoalWatch has been very busy over the past weeks. Here's an update.

1. Dr. Gilles Wendling, a Nanaimo based professional engineer who specializes in ground water and aquifers will be a guest speaker at a public meeting sponsored by Coalwatch, September 13th, at 7pm, at the Fanny Bay Community Hall. Dr. Wendling will outline the potential impacts of the proposed Raven Coal Mine Project and what impacts they may pose on our drinking water. CoalWatch will also give an update on the federal and provincial environmental assessments for the project.
Please plan to attend this important meeting.

2. Federal comment period: Please remember that the deadline for submitting your comments during this first federal comment period is September 20th. You can view the comments submitted to the CEAA from July19-August 30 on our website and more information on where to send your comments is also available: www.coalwatch.ca

3. Provincial Comment Period: Still no definitive word on the exact time the provincial comment period will commence. Best guess around the end of September or early October, but it's just a guess.

4. FINANCES: CoalWatch has been busy over the last 10 months bringing issues concerning the coal mine to the public's attention. We've held meetings throughout Vancouver Island and Vancouver. A glance on our website will give you a detail of our activities. However, this all costs money. Up to now our operations have been funded by a combination of grants, personal donations and the generosity of key CoalWatch volunteers and workers.

If you are in agreement with our efforts it is time to step up to the plate financially. The Environmental Assessment (AIR) document is looming. We will need to be able to activate our Technical Group as well as increase the level of legal support as we make our response to that document. Please give generously.
